Local log analyzer

Analyze Logs Locally With AI That Stays on Your Machine

Grep Badger is a local log analyzer for developers who need AI help without cloud upload. Open local files or SSH into servers, ask questions in plain English, and keep sensitive logs on your own machine with Ollama. If you prefer cloud models, you can also connect OpenAI or Anthropic.

Your logs are private. Your analysis should be too.

Seventy-seven percent of employees paste production data into AI chat tools. Eleven percent of that is confidential — database strings, API keys, customer PII. You can't be one of them.

You need AI help analyzing your logs, but the options suck. Cloud AI tools want you to paste. Cloud log tools want you to upload everything. And you've got logs with internal IPs, user data, and credentials you're legally obligated to protect.

Private by default

Local AI. Your machine. Your rules.

By default, Grep Badger uses Ollama to run AI models directly on your computer, so your logs stay on your machine. No cloud upload. No one else's server reading your data.

Ask questions in plain English — "What caused the spike at 3pm?", "Summarize all database errors from the last deployment" — and get answers quickly. If you want cloud models, Grep Badger also supports OpenAI and Anthropic APIs.

Local AI with Ollama

Supports Llama 3, Mistral, CodeLlama, and any other Ollama model.

100% offline

With Ollama, it works without internet once models are downloaded.

Private by default

With Ollama, your logs stay on your machine.

Multiple AI providers

Use Ollama locally, or connect OpenAI or Anthropic if you want cloud models.

Natural language queries

Ask questions like you would ask a teammate.

Cross-platform

Windows and Linux.

Three steps to private AI analysis

  1. 1. Install Ollama and pull a model (ollama pull llama3.2)
  2. 2. Open your logs in Grep Badger — local files or via SSH
  3. 3. Ask questions — "What errors occurred in the last hour?"

In the local setup, Grep Badger sends your question plus the relevant log context to the model running on your machine. If you prefer cloud models, OpenAI and Anthropic are supported too.

When local AI matters

  • • Security logs — IPs, credentials, vulnerability data you can't expose
  • • Application logs — user IDs, session tokens, PII in stack traces
  • • Infrastructure logs — internal topology, hostnames, configurations
  • • Air-gapped environments — defense, finance, healthcare networks with no internet
  • • Freelance/contract work — client logs covered by NDAs

Common questions

What AI models work with Grep Badger?
For local AI, any model supported by Ollama. Llama 3, Mistral, CodeLlama, Mixtral, and Phi all work well. Larger models give better analysis; smaller models are faster on modest hardware. If you want cloud models, Grep Badger also supports OpenAI and Anthropic.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only to download Ollama and models the first time if you want local AI. After that, Ollama works offline. If you choose OpenAI or Anthropic instead, those providers require an internet connection.
Is any data sent anywhere?
If you use Ollama, no — AI processing happens on your machine. If you connect OpenAI or Anthropic, the data you send goes to that provider. Grep Badger does not have telemetry. The only other network traffic is SSH connections you explicitly initiate — and even those are optional.
What if I don't want AI at all?
AI is completely optional. Grep Badger works as a fast, capable log viewer with or without any AI provider. You can add it later.
How much RAM/VRAM do I need?
Depends on the model. Llama 3.2 (3B parameters) runs comfortably on 8GB RAM. Larger models benefit from a GPU but run on CPU too.
